Intro to Should You Upgrade to M3 from M1 and M2 Macs
Before making a decision on upgrade to M3 from M1 or M2, let’s examine their features and specifications first. The M1, M2, and M3 chips are part of Apple’s lineup of silicon chips, showcasing advancements in performance and capabilities.
The main differences between these chips
Manufacturing Process: While the M1 and M2 chips used TSMC’s 5-nanometer technology, the M3 chips are the first to adopt TSMC’s new 3-nanometer chip technology. This advancement promises better performance and efficiency.
Performance: The M3 chips offer significant improvements over the M1 and M2. Claimed by Apple, the M3 chips provide 2.5x better GPU speeds than the M1 while consuming half the power. M3 performance cores are about 30% faster than M1’s and 15% faster than M2’s. The M3 efficiency cores are up to 50% faster than M1’s and 30% faster than M2’s.
Transistor Count: The M3 chip boasts 25 billion transistors, exceeding the 20 billion in M2 and 16 billion in M1, contributing to its enhanced performance.
GPU Cores: The M3 Max stands out with 40 GPU cores, offering more capacity compared to M1 and M2. Additionally, the M3 introduces new rendering features like hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, a first for Mac.
Architecture: The M3 chip’s architecture, combined with the advanced 3nm manufacturing process, distinguishes it from the M1 and M2. The M3’s architecture is engineered to deliver significantly increased performance and unleash new capabilities for Mac.
Should You Upgrade to M3 from M1 and M2 Macs?
In our honest view, we don’t think so. Tasks achievable in the latest M3 MacBook Pro can also be accomplished effectively in the M1 and M2 MacBook Pro models; the difference is minimal. In our perspective, there are only three reasons why you might consider upgrading from M1 or M2 to M3.
The initial reason is if you require a larger screen, increased RAM capacity, or more extensive storage size. Upgrading these through a third party, like us, becomes expensive due to certain parts requiring soldering. Hence, opting for the latest M3 makes more economic sense.
The second reason is if you often work outdoors or in very bright conditions. One of the major distinctions between the M1 and M3 is the overall brightness level. For SDR content, the M1 reaches 500 nits, whereas the M3 triples that to 1,600 nits. However, in sunny outdoor or intensely bright indoor settings, this difference becomes apparent. While some third-party apps allow you to enhance the M1’s screen brightness, for the ultimate brightness, the M3 is better!
The final reason is if you work in a highly fast-paced setting (like live sports or entertainment events) where every second counts. Investing in the M3 MacBook Pro might be worthwhile in such cases.
